Virtual Orientation

DSA launch virtual orientation to support students’ academic life span

The Directorate of Student Affairs (DSA) recently launched a series of virtual orientation videos and tutorials to augment 1st year and even senior students with the university’s varied academic procedures, faculty and school information, amongst others. This virtual concept was initiated to cater for students who missed in-person orientation due to a variety of factors such as delayed results and students who transferred from other institutions.

According to Magriet Mainga, Dean of DSA, orientation is important because it not only familiarises students with the university’s academic procedures and processes, but it also aids students transitioning into university life, and affords them with an opportunity to balance their academic and social lives.

“For freshmen who are leaving home for the first time and living alone, being given pocket money and having to manage it on their own can be quite overwhelming. In situations like this, the DSA can step in to act as a parent or guardian”, added Mainga.

Assistant Director: Student Affairs, Tangeni Velikoshi, stressed that the virtual orientation will connect students to the right personnel within the institution, allowing them to receive appropriate assistance. “Students will be able to make informed decisions when they know whom to approach if they experience an issue”, emphasized Velikoshi.

Student Representative Council of Internal Affairs at Khomasdal Campus remarked that: “This was a good initiative as a lot of students are not familiar with the university’s rules and regulations. And, it being conveyed to them in this entertaining manner, will encourage them to note down one or two of the important rules and regulations for them to survive here at the University of Namibia.”
