UNAM’s Besser and Mutyayi lead the charge in Under 21 Netball Team

From Campus to National Courts:

In an inspiring development for the University of Namibia (UNAM), 2 esteemed players from the UNAM Jaguars netball team, Elizabeth Besser and Grace Mutyayi, have been selected to represent Namibia, in the Under 21 World Cup Qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa, from 16 – 24 March 2024.

Elizabeth’s appointment as the team captain of the Under 21 Namibia National Netball Team further amplifies this honour. Their selection spotlights the dual focus at UNAM on academic and athletic excellence, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Mr. Sakaria “Eto’o” Natangwe, the Assistant Sport Officer at UNAM, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments, stating, “This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students. Elizabeth and Grace embody the spirit of UNAM, excelling not only in their studies but also on the sports field. Their achievements underscore the rich tapestry of opportunities available here, across our diverse sports codes.”

Lerato Bohitile, the UNAM Jaguars Club Captain, shared her enthusiasm for their success: “Elizabeth and Grace have been exemplary in their commitment and performance. Their selection is a shining example of inspiration for all of us, demonstrating that dedication and passion in sports can lead to national and potentially international recognition.”

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Besser, a 2nd year student doing a Bachelor of Commerce in Chartered Accountancy (CA), reflecting on her new role and the upcoming qualifiers, remarked, “It’s a huge honour to lead our national team and represent UNAM on such a significant platform. This opportunity is a dream come true, and I am deeply grateful for the support and training I’ve received at the University.”

Grace Mutyayi, a Bachelor of Biochemistry 1st year student, echoing Elizabeth’s sentiments, added, “Being selected for the national team is a milestone I’ve always aspired to achieve. It’s a privilege to showcase the skills honed at UNAM and to highlight the calibre of our University’s sports programmes on a global stage.”

As they prepare for the Under 21 World Cup Qualifiers and look forward to the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 in Gibraltar, the UNAM community stands united in support of Elizabeth, Grace, and the entire Jaguars team, celebrating their achievements and the vibrant sports culture at the University.
