Gold, silver and two bronze medals gave the University of Namibia (UNAM) plenty to celebrate after its Staff Sports and Social Club (USSSC), delivered a strong performance at the recently concluded Intervarsity Games hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, on 12 September 2026.
The UNAM USSSC delegation participated in various sporting codes, competing against fellow university staff across the region and demonstrating teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
The highlight of the delegation’s performance came in Tug of War, where the UNAM team powered its way to gold, securing the top spot and setting the tone for an impressive outing.
The medal winning performance continued in other codes with the Female Darts team claiming silver, while Netball and Volleyball each secured a bronze.
For USSSC Acting Chairperson, Mr Ronald Kanguti, the results reflect the commitment and competitive spirit within the University. “Our performance at the Wits Intervarsity Games demonstrates the enthusiasm, teamwork and competitive spirit within UNAM,” said Mr Kanguti.
Commenting on the delegation’s performance, Kanguti, says the achievements demonstrate that UNAM is well prepared for its next major responsibility: hosting the 25th edition of the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) Games.
“As we celebrate these achievements, our focus now turns to welcoming universities from across the region to Namibia. UNAM is ready to host the 25th edition of the SAUSSA Games and to deliver a memorable experience for all participating institutions,” stated Kanguti.
The 25th SAUSSA Games will be hosted by the University of Namibia in Windhoek from 6–12 December 2026, bringing together university staff from participating institutions for a week of sporting competition, cultural exchange, networking and regional camaraderie.
The upcoming Games will be held under the theme: SAUSSA @ 25: Connecting Universities, Cultures & Communities through Sports.
UNAM congratulates all members of the USSSC delegation who represented the University at Wits University and acknowledges the athletes, coordinators and officials whose collective efforts contributed to the successful participation.
With four medals secured in Johannesburg and the 25th SAUSSA Games on the horizon, UNAM is carrying the momentum forward – from competing on the regional stage to preparing to host it.
