UNAM’s first international MSc student in astrophysics graduates

Francisco Macucule, originally from Mozambique, has made history as the first MSc graduate in astrophysics from the University of Namibia (UNAM). He received his Master of Science in Physics degree in April 2024 at UNAM’s Windhoek graduation ceremony. His thesis focused extensively on-site characterisation for new astrophysics instrumentation in Namibia.

His interest began at a young age, when he often found himself pondering questions about astronomical phenomena. He later pursued his interest at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics (Hons). In addition to his studies, he engaged in astronomy-related workshops and seasonal schools led by remarkable astronomy initiatives, e.g., Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA).

Francisco secured the opportunity to study in Namibia by being awarded a South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) Scholarship.  He based his work on research co-supervised by Professor Michael Backes of the University of Namibia and Professor Tinus Stander of the University of Pretoria. Since the lead supervisor, Prof. Backes, was affiliated with UNAM, Francisco enrolled at UNAM.

Francisco’s interest in astrophysics intensified while he was a student at UNAM. This demonstrates the strong sense of community wide range of global networks, and globally acclaimed projects of UNAM’s Physics Section in the Department of Physics, Chemistry & Material Science.

Namibia has the most beautiful night sky

“Living in Namibia as a Master’s student was an unparalleled experience, blending academic rigour with different cultural interests. Working together with researchers from various backgrounds, I found myself enriched by the warmth and hospitality of the Namibian people”, stated Francisco.

Reflecting on his time in Namibia, Francisco cherishes the beautiful memories he spent under the Namibian night sky. “Of all the countries I have visited, Namibia has the most beautiful night sky. While in Namibia, I was able to see things I had never imagined possible with the naked eye, such as nearby galaxies,” expressed Francisco.

Professor Backes said: “Graduating the first foreign student in astrophysics with MSc, showcases both, the international standing and attractiveness of this MSc programme: a student from Mozambique, supported by a scholarship from South Africa to study in Namibia seems like a rare combination.”

“We are particularly grateful to SARAO for the scholarship, and to the UNAM International Students Coordinator, the Centre for Grants Management and the Registrar who alleviated administrative hurdles both internally and with the NQA, so that Francisco could graduate within the minimal allowed time of 2 years.”

Besides the MSc in (Astro)Physics programme, the Department also offers MSc degrees in Renewable Energy (Photovoltaics) and Nuclear Sciences and has currently PhD students enrolled in all three mentioned research fields.
