UNAM to be part of International Summer School and Workshop, Hosted By Bremen University, Germany

The collaboration between the University of Namibia (through the Department of Applied Educational Science (DAES) and Bremen University (German), Department of Inclusiv Pedagogik, continues to bear fruit under the academic exchange umbrella. Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), which translates into the German Academic Exchange Service, is center stage in funding this Memorandum of Understanding between the former Department of Educational Psychology and Inclusive Education (now part of the Department Applied Educational Sciences) and the Department of Inclusiv Pedagogik, University of Bremen.

Since the inception of this collaboration in 2018, there have been remarkable activities, among others:

  • Two projects planning and funding submission workshops (ongoing).
  • Inclusive Education Curriculum Development and Curriculum Revision activities in Namibia (Ongoing, online survey currently being prepared to solicit inputs from former and current students in Masters of Education *Inclusive Education* about their experiences and suggestions for improvements.
  • Two University of Bremen staff and students visit to the University of Namibia.
  • Two University of Namibia staff and students visit to the University of Bremen.
  • Four online workshops and seminars involving postgraduate students and staff.

The latest development on this fruitful MoU is the International Summer School and Staff Workshop to be held from 29 August 2022 – 2 September 2022, hosted by the University of Bremen. The Summer School is guided by the theme: Diversity and Inclusion in Teacher Education and will be attended by postgraduate students and staff from Universities in Namibia, Botswana, Germany, Italy and Spain. DAES is delighted to announce that three students and three staff members from the University of Namibia will attend the Summer School and Workshop at Bremen University. The selection of students followed an arduous process. After a rigorous application and selection process, the following UNAM students registered for the Masters in Education (Inclusive Education), were selected for participation in the aforementioned Summer School and Workshop:

  1. Elizabeth Katale (First Year Student)
  2. Kahonde Tjipura (First Year Student)
  3. Helen Jasper (Second Year Student)

The three staff members attending the Summer School and Workshop are:

  1. L. E. Simasiku (HOD: Department of Applied Educational Sciences)
  2. C. K. Haihambo (Project Coordinator and Inclusive Education Lecturer and Researcher)
  3. Mirjam Sheyapo (Lecturer and PhD Student)

The Department of Applied Educational Sciences remains committed to contributing towards achieving the vision and mission of UNAM through its engagement with both (national and international) stakeholders. Collaboration is part and parcel of the 21st century for the advancement of skills and knowledge. As Paul Solarz argued, “Collaboration allows us to know more than we are capable of knowing by ourselves”.
