The University of Namibia has set a new benchmark in healthcare education and service delivery with the official inauguration of its first-ever Campus Pharmacy on 31 March 2025 at the Hage Geingob Campus in Windhoek.
The pharmacy is the first of its kind in Namibia, integrating academic training with professional pharmacy services under one roof.
The Campus Pharmacy is a fully operational retail community pharmacy, licensed by the Pharmacy Council of Namibia. It caters to the healthcare needs of students, staff, patients from the Health Centre, and the wider public – providing chronic and acute prescription medication, over-the-counter medicines, clinical and veterinary supplies, as well as vaccines.
“This pharmacy is not just a service facility,” said Prof. Kenneth Matengu, UNAM Vice-Chancellor. “It represents our strategic pledge to innovation in health sciences education, providing students with real-world exposure while addressing genuine healthcare needs.”
The pharmacy operates under a lease partnership between UNAM and a private pharmacy business, selected through a public bidding process.
This arrangement ensures high standards while giving pharmacy students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, working alongside licensed professionals.
“This is a monumental step in preparing our students for the job market,” noted Prof. Judith Hall, Executive Dean: Faculty of Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. “Unlike a mock pharmacy, this facility allows our students to learn in a functioning environment, serving real patients with real needs.”
Situated on the ground floor of the Health Training Centre, the pharmacy complements an array of clinical services offered by the University, including medical, dental, radiology, nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.
Miles Musimbe, the Responsible Pharmacist, expressed readiness to serve: “We look forward to meeting the healthcare needs of the University and surrounding community. The pharmacy is stocked with everything from prescription medicine to general supplies – and we’re open to everyone.”
Also present at the launch was Mr. Boni Singu, Associate Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the Hage Geingob Campus, who highlighted the educational value of the initiative.
“This Campus Pharmacy is a game-changer for pharmacy education in Namibia. It allows our students to transition seamlessly from theory to practice, while contributing meaningfully to community health.”
The Campus Pharmacy is open to all and marks another stride in UNAM’s ongoing journey to bridge education, service, and innovation.
