In an exciting update for the University of Namibia community, the implementation of the long-awaited Performance Management System (PMS) is well underway. This transformative initiative aims to enhance accountability, improve performance and create a culture of excellence at UNAM. The recent progress in signing Individual Performance Scorecards (IPSs) marks a significant milestone in this journey.
Led by Mr Fanuel Hiiko, Acting Director: Strategic Institutional Planning and Mr Reginald Izaks, Director: Human Capital, UNAM is proud to announce that the top leadership has already signed their IPSs, setting a commendable example for the rest of the University. Their commitment to the process showcases their dedication to fostering positive change.
The signing process took place in a well-structured manner, ensuring that it starts with the Head of each division (PVCs) followed by the Heads of Units (Directors, Executive Deans, Chief Officers). The Heads of Units under the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Pro-Vice Chancellors (PVCs) were the first to sign their IPSs on 28 April 2023. This was followed by the Heads of Units under the PVC responsible for Research, Innovation and Development, who also signed their IPSs on the same day.
Additionally, the Heads of Units under the PVC responsible for Administration and Finance signed their IPSs on 11 May 2023. Lastly, the Heads of Units under the PVC responsible for Academic Affairs are scheduled to sign their IPSs on 31 May 2023, with their respective Pro-Vice Chancellor.
With the top leadership leading the way, the signing process for the remaining staff members will now be facilitated by the Heads of Units, including Executive Deans, Directors and Chief Officers. The Directorate of Strategic Institutional Planning will provide guidance and support throughout this process, ensuring that all IPSs are in place and helping where clarification is needed.
In parallel, the Quality Assurance (QA) process is currently ongoing to ensure that the IPSs meet the required standards. The signing process for the remaining units will run simultaneously with the QA process, with completion expected in the first week of June 2023.
Mr Hiiko emphasises the importance of active participation from all UNAM staff members in this transformative endeavour. “The PMS presents an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the creation of a better UNAM.
“By embracing the system and actively engaging in its implementation, staff members can collectively shape the future of the institution and work towards the UNAM we aspire to have.”
Prof Kenneth Matengu, UNAM Vice Chancellor, stresses the importance of staff members’ informed participation as UNAM moves forward with the implementation of the performance management system.
In his words, “As we move forward, it is crucial for all staff members to stay informed and involved. Familiarise yourselves with the PMS – especially the IPS, its goals and the processes involved.
“This is an exciting time for UNAM, and your commitment and dedication will play a vital role in the success of this initiative.”
Prof Matengu encourages staff members to take ownership of their roles in shaping the future of UNAM, underscoring the significance of their engagement and dedication to the PMS.
