UNAM athletes shine on the African stage

In a delightful development for the University of Namibia (UNAM), 5 of its finest athletes, alongside 2 dedicated training partners, have embarked on a journey to Accra, Ghana, to showcase their prowess at the All-African Games, from 08 – 23 March 2024. This delegation from the UNAM Athletics Club (UNAC) not only represents the university but also carries the national flag, demonstrating the exceptional talent nurtured within UNAM’s walls.

The athletes making waves this year include Jade Nangula, the reigning 200m national champion, who will compete in the 100m and 200m sprints and the 4x100m relay. Napumue Hengari, a rising star in athletics, has earned her place in the 400m, 4x400m relay, and 4x400m mixed relay after recording the fastest time of the year at a recent event. Dux Lutahezi and Enock Kawiwi, both formidable in the 400m, will participate in the 4x400m and 4x400m mixed relays, showcasing the depth of talent at UNAM.

Meriam Minin, UNAM’s esteemed high jumper and technical official, will accompany the team as the female Team Manager, exemplifying the multifaceted talent within the University’s athletics community.

Mr. Sakaria “Eto’o” Natangwe, the Assistant Sport Officer at UNAM, expressed his enthusiasm for the team’s prospects: “We are incredibly proud of our athletes who have qualified for the All-African Games. Their hard work, dedication, and talent are a testament to the quality of our sports programmes at UNAM. We believe they will not only compete but excel and inspire many back home.”

Meriam Minin, the Team Manager, shared her thoughts on the team’s preparation and spirit: “Our athletes have shown remarkable commitment and resilience in their training. They’re not just competing; they’re carrying the hopes and pride of our entire University. We’re confident that they will represent UNAM and Namibia with distinction.”

Furthermore, UNAM’s athletic reach extends beyond its own Club, with training partners Mahhad Bock and Dam David, affiliated with the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), also set to compete. Bock, a record holder in the 400m and 4x400m, and David, the leading 800m athlete in Namibia, are poised to make significant impacts in their respective events.

UNAM, more than academics

This representation at a continental level underscores the opportunities available at UNAM, not just in academia but also in sports. With 10 active sports codes including football, rugby, and basketball, UNAM is the place to be for aspiring athletes across its 12 campuses, all under the dedicated guidance of the Directorate of Student Affairs.

As these athletes compete, they not only strive for personal bests and medals but also exemplify the spirit and talent cultivated at UNAM. Their journey, from training on campus to shining on the African stage, is a testament to the University’s commitment to fostering excellence in all facets of student life.

The entire UNAM community is filled with pride and sends its best wishes to these outstanding athletes. Their achievements serve as an inspiration – illustrating that at UNAM, the pursuit of excellence knows no bounds.
