Tenacious study efforts pay-off for 21 UNAM PhD graduates

The University of Namibia (UNAM) proudly marked a historic moment, conferring PhDs to 21 students in the Class of 2024, of which 15 graduated during the Spring Graduation Ceremony in October.

This achievement at a single graduation speaks volumes about UNAM’s commitment to advancing research and fostering a culture of academic excellence in Namibia.

PhD graduates drive societal progress by advancing knowledge, solving complex problems, and developing innovative solutions.

Their expertise strengthens the workforce, fuels industries, and tackles pressing global challenges, creating positive change and positioning their nations as competitive knowledge economies.

“This milestone isn’t just about numbers,” said Prof. Nelago Indongo, Director for Research Services.

“It embodies years of dedication, innovative research, and the collective perseverance that defines our university community.”

Prof. Indongo emphasised the transformative journey these graduates undertook, acknowledging the rigorous study, late nights, and numerous challenges they overcame.

“Your resilience, curiosity, and passion will leave a lasting impact,” she shared in heartfelt congratulations to the graduates.

Dr. Armas Shikongo, Head of Postgraduate Research Support Services, expressed his excitement, noting how each graduate has “pushed the boundaries of discovery in their respective fields.”

Their achievements set an inspiring example, proving what is possible through determination and scholarly pursuit.

“Postgraduate students are the backbone of research at any esteemed university,” added Prof. Davis Mumbengegwi, Head of Multidisciplinary Research Services.

“Our growing number of PhD graduates reflects UNAM’s progress and commitment to research, aligning with our strategic goals to address both national and global challenges.”

Prof. Indongo also highlighted the refinement of UNAM’s support systems, which have streamlined processes to enhance the PhD experience.

“We’ve listened to candidates’ challenges, and our mentorship and co-supervision models now provide more positive and structured support,” she remarked.

UNAM looks forward to the contributions these PhD graduates will make, confident in their potential to drive societal change.
