At the University of Namibia, nursing education stands out as a beacon of light, producing graduates who are not only highly skilled but also equipped with the professional readiness to excel in the healthcare industry.
This commitment was evident as the School of Nursing and Public Health at Oshakati Campus hosted an Employee Readiness Seminar for final-year nursing students in December 2024.
Held under the theme “Unlocking Your Career Path: Navigating Your Nursing Journey,” the seminar was designed to help students transition smoothly from academia to professional practice. Given the dynamic and competitive nature of the healthcare sector, graduates must be well-prepared for various roles, both locally and internationally.
Empowering future healthcare leaders
The event featured industry experts, seasoned professionals, and engaging discussions on ethical dilemmas, job search strategies, and interview preparation. Students also participated in interactive role plays, showcasing effective ways to navigate job interviews and workplace scenarios.
Petrus Shingandji, Assistant Lecturer: Clinical Instructor at UNAM’s Oshakati Campus, emphasised the seminar’s importance: “UNAM doesn’t just train nurses, we prepare healthcare leaders. Beyond clinical skills, our graduates are equipped with ethical decision-making, professionalism and adaptability – qualities essential in today’s healthcare landscape.”
The seminar also highlighted international career prospects for nursing graduates. Mr. Eino Kangombe, a UNAM alumnus now working in Germany, shared invaluable insights on opportunities beyond Namibia: “Nursing is a global profession. With the foundation UNAM provides, graduates can confidently pursue careers anywhere in the world. The key is to remain open to learning and embracing diverse healthcare environments.”
A seminar of impact
Students found the experience enlightening and motivating. Selestine Shaanika, a final-year student, described it as “an eye-opener”, while Saima Eliakim noted that it “highlighted the endless opportunities available beyond hospital settings.”
The seminar was made possible through the generous support of On Point Marketing North, KaiBrown Surgical Centre and Adeshe Investment, reinforcing the vital role of partnerships in shaping Namibia’s next generation of healthcare professionals.
With such initiatives, UNAM continues to set the benchmark for nursing education in Namibia, ensuring its graduates remain at the forefront of the profession.
