Namclear, the sole clearinghouse in Namibia, recently donated computing equipment to the University of Namibia (UNAM) to support students’ practical learning and the university’s innovation and technology hub.
The donation consists of two Adaptive Security Analyzer Servers, Core and KVM Switchers. The equipment was previously owned and used by Namclear to support its own Information Technology needs.
During the handover ceremony, Namclear’s Risk and Compliance Manager, Mr. Patrick Mberirua, remarked that the donation stems from the need to offer students practical experience.
“Each year, we recruit most of our human resources from UNAM amongst other universities. Because of this, we deemed it necessary to donate this equipment to universities that train our prospective staff members”, remarked Mberirua. He further explained that the equipment is still absolute and that students will benefit from using it.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Development, Prof. Anicia Peters, while receiving the donation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Namclear, and remarked that, “This donation will boost the university’s computing infrastructure in an optimistic manner”.
Prof. Peters further disclosed ongoing plans to establish an entrepreneurship and tech-maker space. “We are currently busy setting up infrastructure for a big entrepreneurship space, where we have earmarked a space for tech-makers. This will enable us to invite staff and students to experiment with technology”, said Prof. Peters.
The equipment will at the moment, serve the University’s innovation and technology hub, which is currently incubating 14 student groups, of which 9 are tech-innovators. These groups were selected during the University’s first-ever artificial intelligence pitch night.
