On February 28, 2024, the University of Namibia’s Main Campus Gym Hall buzzed with excitement during the successful launch of 3 pivotal policies by the Directorate of Student Affairs. These include the Student Disciplinary Policy, Regulations and Procedures; the Ethics & Code of Conduct for Students Policy and Regulations; and the revised Student Representative Council (SRC) Constitution.
Professor Ellen Ndeshi Namhila, Pro Vice Chancellor for Administration & Finance, inaugurated the event with her welcoming remarks. She emphasised that the Student Disciplinary Policy, Regulations and Procedures aim to provide a framework for promoting student conduct and addressing student misconduct and ensuring a fair disciplinary process within the academic community. This initiative underscores the University’s dedication to nurturing integrity, honesty, and responsibility, as highlighted in the Ethics & Code of Conduct for Students Policy and Regulations.
“The development of these policies and the SRC Constitution was a collective endeavour, reflecting extensive consultations with students, faculty, administrative staff, and relevant external parties,” Professor Namhila stated. “These documents are not static but dynamic instruments that demand our continuous dedication to their implementation, review, and enhancement.”
She encouraged everyone – students, academics, and administrative staff – to embody the principles set forth in these documents and collaborate towards fostering a harmonious and inclusive university environment.
The event also featured a keynote speech from Hon. Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology, who captivated attendees by highlighting the policies’ significance in creating an ideal learning environment. She offered advice to students on essential traits for success, emphasising the importance of time management and organisation.
Ms. Twapewa-Ashihe Mungoba, SRC President, highlighted the SRC Constitution’s role in enabling students to engage actively in decision-making processes. “Adhering to a code of ethics and promoting a strong SRC Constitution are fundamental to not only maintaining our institution’s values but also to our collective advancement and success,” she remarked.
The policy launch was marked by lively debates and performances from notable artists like Top Cheri and Chester House Prince, culminating in a day filled with a shared resolve to maintain the University’s behavioural and governance standards.
