The University of Namibia (UNAM) proudly inaugurated the Rhino-Halliburton Technology Centre at its Southern Campus in Keetmanshoop, on 24 October 2024. This state-of-the-art facility marks an important milestone in advancing geoscience education and research capabilities, not only at the Southern Campus but across Namibia.
The Technology Centre has been outfitted with next-generation computing hardware from Rhino Resources along with a comprehensive three-year software package from Halliburton. This combined donation, valued at over N$130 million, will significantly enhance research and practical training in Petroleum Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, and Data Analysis.
The lab is a demonstration of the collaboration between academia and industry, aiming to empower students and researchers with advanced tools for geoscience exploration and production.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Dr. Kenneth Matengu, UNAM Vice Chancellor, emphasised the importance of the Technology Centre in augmenting the University’s research capabilities. The establishment of this facility confirms our promise to the nation that UNAM is committed to providing students with the best possible scientific tools. These resources will deepen their knowledge and develop their skills to effectively contribute to Namibia’s energy mix and sustainably grow the natural resources sectors. This is the perfect opportunity to do so.”
Ms. Maria Mbudhi, Namibia Deputy Country Manager of Rhino Resources, remarked, “Rhino is extremely proud of this initiative, which was birthed through a strategic industry partnership, for the benefit of the student community at UNAM. The opening of this facility is a cornerstone that has been set for a future generation of Namibian students to build a brighter tomorrow. Rhino is looking forward to seeing the wealth of Namibian talent that will come through these doors, ready to participate in the energy industry and contribute to the economic growth of the Land of the Brave.”
Mr. Antoine Berel, Halliburton Vice President Africa Other South, stated, “This collaboration strengthens our investment in Namibia’s future by equipping students and early-career professionals with cutting-edge tools and knowledge,”
Dr. Absai Vatuva, Head of the Department of Geosciences in the School of Science, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities the new lab will bring. “This Technology Centre is a game-changer for our students and staff. With the advanced hardware and software at their disposal, we are now equipped to lead groundbreaking research and foster innovation in geosciences.”
The cutting-edge hardware donated by Rhino Resources comprises of 15 high-end Dell workstations with dual 27-inch monitors, professional desks, ergonomic chairs and a video projector system, all of which provide an optimal learning environment for the students.
The software bundle donated by Halliburton includes DecisionSpace Petrophysics, DecisionSpace Geosciences 10ep, Seismic Analysis 10ep, and OpenWorks 5000.10.7.0, all of which are integral to the exploration and production (E&P) sectors. A complete Dataset for Geoscience, reservoir, drilling and completion is also part of the donation.
These tools allow students and researchers to conduct detailed subsurface data analysis, seismic interpretation, and geophysical assessments, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical industry applications.
The Rhino-Halliburton Technology Centre represents a substantial investment in the future of Namibia’s geoscience and energy sectors, providing hands-on training opportunities that prepare students to excel in their careers and within their communities.
UNAM looks forward to seeing the positive impact of this collaboration, setting a new standard for educational facilities in the region.
