Similar to NBS students who came third in the Namibian Scholars’ Investment Challenge, three students in Financial Mathematics also participated in the Namibian Scholars’ Investment Challenge and came second out of 162 teams. They won a cash amount of N$30 000. The prize money is shared, 75% team members and 25% University of Namibia.
The students are, Loise Shipepe, Monika Aupindi, and Maria Shipahu, and they participated under the team named “Eagle Investors”. The Investment challenge is an excellent approach to encourage students and the general public to become more knowledgeable about the workings of the Namibian capital market, and the Eagle Investors achieved an incredible 23.3 percent return on investment in their portfolio. They used their financial mathematics investment skills to conduct fundamental and technical analysis of stocks listed on the Namibian Stock Exchange for them to ensure that they constituted a strategically-diversified portfolio.
The students indicated that their participation in the challenge gained them practical exposure to financial markets, while they practically experienced how the capital market works, and that it was indeed an opportunity for them to showcase their skills of financial markets as well as portfolio management taught in the financial mathematics programme at UNAM.
“As lecturer of financial mathematics, I’m very proud of these young talents and implore many of our students to participate in this initiative in the future” said Dr. Samuel Nuugulu, Senior lecturer, Mathematics.
