Engineering Campus Motivational Day inspires 547 learners from 23 schools

In an inspiring assembly at the Eng. Jose Eduardo dos Santos (JEDS) Campus in Ongwediva, the Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted a stimulating Motivational Day for grade 9 – 12 learners from the Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati, and Ohangwena regions. The event drew 547 learners from 23 schools, demonstrating a strong commitment to academic distinction and personal growth.

The Motivational Day, organised by the JEDS SRC under its community engagement initiative, aimed to address the concerning failure rates of 2022 and 2023 by empowering learners at a pivotal point in their educational journey. Dr. Malakia Haimbangu, Senior Education Officer from Omusati Region, emphasised the power of resilience and determination. “In the face of challenges, your resolve to succeed must be stronger than any obstacle,” he stated, echoing the day’s theme of perseverance and motivation.

Prof. Oluwagbenga Johnson, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering Professor, highlighted the transformative potential of education in engineering. “Engineering is not just a career; it’s a way to shape the world. Your curiosity and creativity are the keys to unlocking a future filled with possibilities,” Prof. Johnson encouraged, underlining the event’s focus on inspiring learners to explore paths in engineering at the Campus.

Amidst the distinguished speakers was Ms. Johanna Shinana, a 4-year Civil Engineering student, who shared her journey and the importance of setting goals. “Every challenge is a stepping stone to your success. It’s about setting your sights high and working tirelessly towards your dreams,” she explained, offering a student’s perspective on the journey towards academic and personal ful-filment.

The event also featured performances by the Northern Campuses choir and engaging activities organised by the YOU Network Society, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the motivational day.

This gathering not only served as a fire of inspiration but also highlighted the UNAM School of Engineering & the Built Environment commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators and thinkers. Through motivational speeches, interactive sessions, and a showcase of educational opportunities, the JEDS Motivational Day has set a precedent for empowering Namibia’s youth to aim for excellence and aspire to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
