UNAM Plays Key Role in Establishing Kiswahili Resource Library in Namibia

The University of Namibia (UNAM), in collaboration with the Tanzania High Commission in Namibia, officially launched the Kiswahili Resource Library, marking a significant milestone in promoting the Kiswahili language, cultural exchange and academic collaboration between Namibia and Tanzania.

The project, implemented between 2023 and 2026, transformed a shared vision into a fully functional resource centre equipped with a modern library management system, trained personnel and operational procedures to support teaching, learning and research.

Speaking at the launch, His Excellency Caesar Chacha Waitara, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to Namibia, described the library as a symbol of strong and growing relationship between the two countries.

“This resource library is more than a collection of books,” said H.E. Waitara. “It is a bridge connecting our people through language, culture and education, and reflects our commitment to promoting Kiswahili as a language of unity and African identity.”

The initiative was born from consultations following UNESCO’s recognition of 7 July as World Kiswahili Language Day, before the Tanzania High Commission partnered with UNAM to establish a dedicated centre for Kiswahili resources in Namibia.

Project Team Leader and Head of Technical Services at the UNAM Library, Ms Anna Ngula, said the successful completion of the project reflects the value of collaboration and shared expertise.

“The establishment of the Kiswahili Resource Library demonstrates what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to education, cultural preservation and access to knowledge. We are proud to have laid a solid foundation that will benefit generations to come,” she said.

The project included benchmarking visits to leading libraries in Windhoek, the installation of the Koha Integrated Library System, the development of library policies and procedures, and comprehensive training for staff to ensure the library operates independently and sustainably.

Despite challenges relating to infrastructure, space and collections, the project achieved all its objectives through the dedication of the joint project team from UNAM and the Tanzania High Commission.

The Kiswahili Resource Library now stands as a valuable centre for language learning, research and cultural exchange, further strengthening UNAM’s commitment to internationalisation, regional cooperation and partnerships that advance education and knowledge sharing across Africa.
