UNAM experts inspire future female scientists at STEM outreach event

The University of Namibia (UNAM) played a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation of female scientists during a STEM outreach programme hosted at Amazing Kids Private, Windhoek. Held in early February 2025 to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the event showcased the diverse career opportunities within STEM fields and encouraged young learners to pursue science-driven careers.

Empowering the Next Generation of Female Scientists

Spearheaded by the Namibia National Chapter of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), the event featured esteemed UNAM academics and professionals who shared their career journeys, offering valuable insights and advice to the learners.

Prof. Theopoline Omagano Amushendje, an Associate Professor in Molecular Genetics and Head of the Department of Animal Production, Agribusiness & Economics at UNAM’s Neudamm Campus, highlighted the significance of agricultural sciences in ensuring food security and sustainability. “Agriculture is not just about farming, it is a science, a business, and a key to global sustainability,” she stated. She further encouraged students to persevere in their academic and professional journeys, drawing inspiration from biblical teachings on endurance and purpose.

Ms. Lavinia Haikukutu, a Microbiologist and Technologist, underscored the importance of career flexibility, advising learners to explore entrepreneurial opportunities alongside traditional academic paths. “Science is evolving, and so should our approach to careers. Emotional intelligence and soft skills are just as important as technical knowledge,” she explained.

Ms. Rachel Amoomo, a Civil Engineer, linked infrastructure development to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She urged learners to align their career aspirations with global development needs. “When you choose a career in STEM, you are not just working for yourself, you are contributing to Namibia’s and the world’s future,” she stated.

Adding a relatable perspective for the learners, Carla Iradukunda, a 2025 UNAM BSc Animal Science Honours graduate and former Amazing Kids Private School learner, shared her experiences transitioning through different academic levels. “The shift from high school to university was challenging, but discipline and determination kept me focused on my goals,” she shared.

Academic Opportunities in Agriculture

UNAM offers various programmes in the Department of Animal Production, Agribusiness, and Economics to equip students with the necessary skills for careers in agricultural sciences. These include the Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Science Honours (Level 8), Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics (Level 7), and Diploma in Livestock Production (Level 6). These programmes prepare graduates to contribute to Namibia’s agricultural sustainability and economic development.

Simon Shindinge, a 3rd-year BA Media Studies (Public Relations) (Honours) student, is interning at UNAM’s Corporate Engagement & International Relations Directorate.
