From scrums to community service
The University of Namibia’s Rugby team recently demonstrated their commitment to community service through their annual charity giveaway. On Saturday 27 July, the team donated essential food and clothing items to a group of homeless individuals residing at the Khomasdal Stadium.
The Team Manager, Mr. Ryno Visagie, highlighted the origins of this heart-warming initiative. “We started this outreach programme years ago because we saw a pressing need in our communities. Since we are generously sponsored by FNB, we felt compelled to extend our gratitude by giving back in any way we can.”
Mr. Visagie emphasized the players’ enthusiastic participation. “It’s important for our players to engage hands-on and recognise the reality that not everyone is as fortunate. This initiative allows us to be part of something greater than ourselves. In the past, we’ve mostly worked with children, and our players found joy in inspiring hope among them.”
During the handover ceremony, player Otja Auala shared his thoughts on the initiative. “For me, it’s an eye-opening experience. Giving to the less privileged and those in need makes me feel like we are contributing to joy beyond just scrums, touchlines, and knock-ons. It’s my first year with the UNAM Rugby Club, and I’m proud to be part of a team that strives to bring smiles on and off the pitch.”
One of the grateful recipients, John Strauss, expressed his deep appreciation for the UNAM Rugby Club’s thoughtful support. “I’ve been living here for a while, and we are like a little community. Efforts such as this are immensely appreciated.”
The group at the Khomasdal stadium comprises men, women, and children who have been there since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Strauss mentioned that winter is particularly challenging. “There are women, young kids, and babies here. In winter, it’s freezing cold since our shelters are just tents. The clothing items we received today are a blessing.”
Mrs. Olivia Visagie, Secretary of the UNAM Rugby Association, explained their decision to support this specific group. “After learning about this community, we directed our efforts towards them. Most of the clothes and items we collected this time were for adults, as we typically work with kindergartens and children. This year, we wanted to help these individuals who are truly struggling.”
Mrs. Visagie also extended gratitude to the charity organisation Help4Nam for their assistance in organizing the event citing that their help in identifying and coordinating this outreach was invaluable.
The UNAM Rugby Club’s initiative stands as a demonstration of their dedication to making a positive impact beyond the rugby field, fostering a spirit of unity and support within the broader community.
